Faith: A Church of One Book
In his preface to his collection of Sermons, John Wesley wrote:
I am a spirit come from God and returning to God: just hovering over the great gulf; till, a few moments hence, I am no more seen; I drop into an unchangeable eternity! I want to know one thing, —the way to heaven; how to land safe on that happy shore. God himself has condescended to teach me the way. For this very end He came from heaven. He hath written it down in a book. O give me that book! At any price, give me the book of God! I have it: here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be homo unius libri.
Homo unius libri translates “man of one book.” For Wesley, that one book that towers over all others is the Bible. There is no other book like it in all the world. Written by many authors over more than a thousand years, in three different languages it contains historical narrative, poetry, law, prophecy, sermons, biographies, doctrinal treatise, and practical advice. But most importantly, as Wesley points out, it contains the words of life, eternal life. It points us to heaven. It points us to Jesus. We, too, ought to be a people of on book! To that end in 2021, we are going to work our way through the entire Bible. We will be considering the main message of every book, learning the over-arching narrative, and understanding how it all fits together. Each week we will look at one book of the Bible (sometimes two) and I would encourage you to consider reading each of these books throughout the week. We will be providing some helps along the way! I hope you will join us each Sunday in 2021 as we strive to be A Church of One Book.
